Gothamist friend and occasional Opinionist Andrew Bast has recently pulled off a nice relaunch of his site, The New York Inquirer (“We don’t break the news; we put it back together”) and in the process put back together some interesting stuff worth checking out.

This week, for instance, has focused pretty much exclusively on the diamond trade including a five-part series on the darker side of 47th Street, one of the many hearts of the diamond trade.

Diamond trading is an old and well-oiled machine which has had its fingers in nasty situations for quite some time (DeBeers, anyone?). The Government Accountability Office described the problem with those shiny rocks best when it reported while writing about terrorist financing that “Diamonds can be used in lieu of currency in arms deals, money laundering and other crimes. Diamonds are also easily smuggled because they have high value and low weight and are untraceable and odorless.” You’d think that would have made a the trade more closely watched by authorities, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

According to one 47th Street store owner who wouldn’t speak on the record as he said this was a subject for which he could be “crucified,” fencing is a “big time” problem. He said that people are working with the authorities to combat illegal operations in the Diamond District, but asked, “Where’s the FBI?” and said that they needed major sting operations to weed out the handful of bad businessmen who are ruining it for the rest of the industry.

Beyond just preaching of the inherent dangers of the diamond and jewelry industries, the Inquirer also digs up some informative stories on how exactly diamond and gold can launder money, how fences on 47th Street do their business and more. We’ll never look at that thoroughfare the same way again.

This is a wonderfully colorful book with just over 250 pages of inspiring pieces of jewelry from the turn of the century though about 1970. The vast majority of pieces included are metal with the dutiful nod to celluloid, Bakelite and Lucite.

“Costume Jewelry” is a broad introduction to jewelry that may help you to determine a manufacturing style you are particularly interested in emulating or studying. It contains nine chapters covering information such as: basic introduction to costume jewelry including displaying, cleaning and repair; American made and imported styles; unmarked jewelry; styles in semi-precious metals as well as base metals; pricing and plastics.

There are many wonderful color pictures on almost every page along with discussions of the manufacturers, how the pieces were marked, the dates the companies produced jewelry, and estimated prices for the lines.

Body piercing has been practiced by many peoples all over the world. This habit dates all the way from ancient times. The oldest mummified body discovered so far with an earring is that of Ötzi the Iceman (from about 3300 BC), which was found in an Austrian glacier. The earring measured 7-11mm in diameter.

* Nose piercing has been common in India since the 16th century.
* Tongue piercing was popular with the elite of Aztec and Maya civilization, though it was carried out as part of a blood ritual and such piercings were not intended to be permanent.
* Ancient Mesoamericans wore body jewelry in their ears, noses, and lower lips, and such decorations continue to be popular amongst indigenous peoples in these regions.

In the United States, it became quite poplar only after the 60′s, when it was adopted by women and men in the hippie and gay communities, and later the punk subculture, they used most body jewelry.

By the 1980s, male ear piercing had become somewhat common in the United States, although men usually only pierced one of their ears. Today, single and multiple piercing of either or both ears is extremely common among Western women, and fairly common among men.

Body piercing is returning to the mainstream of modern Western cultures as attitudes and values change. Piercings that don’t conform to cultural norms – for example, facial piercings or ear piercings for men – can still be considered inappropriate.

While some people consider body modification with Body Jewelry to be a sign of non-conformity, others deride body piercing as trendy. This can at times lead to prejudice or cognitive bias against those with piercings or visible signs of past piercings.

Cleaning gemstones requires a simple knowledge about gemstones. There are generally two kinds of gemstones; transparent and opaque. Transparent gemstones will make dust visible even if it gathers behind the stone on the ring or any form of jewelry that holds them. These are mostly single crystal stones and therefore application of water will not affect them too much. The use of a soaked cloth to clean the dust gather behind the stone is therefore not a bad move. You may even use a brush to clean the dust if you like.

However, opaque gemstones or organic gemstones are affected by water or any chemical substance. These are usually porous and will allow the water or chemical to flow inside the gemstone. Once inside they can either build up inside, make the stone loose its color or even cause it to crack. Therefore these kind of gemstones should be kept away direct contact with any kind of chemical in sprays, cosmetics and even from water.

There are advanced methods using certain technology to help clean gemstones. Expert jewelers and dealers are well-versed with all these methods and know how to clean each specific kind of gemstone. Therefore it is advised that you do not do the cleaning yourself and rather, have it done by someone who knows more about how to deal with them. If you can afford to buy a gemstone, why not spend a little more money on keeping them safe and clean?

Gemstones are hard materials. In contact with some other gemstone or the metals which contain them such as gold, they can crack each other or the metal. Therefore care must be taken with jewelry how it is kept and handled. Jewelry is expensive and valuable, especially those with precious gemstones in them, therefore they should be treated with care.

So if you are going to give jewelry as a gift to your loved one, then you may look into purchasing a handmade silver jewelry as one of your gift options.

But before you purchase handcrafted jewelry, you have to consider to whom will you be giving these jewelries for. Since these are handcrafted jewelry, they may have come from one’s own personal view and personal choice of craft. You may base your choice of jewelry depending on the occasion or what you think the person would like to get for that specific occasion. Whether it’s a wedding anniversary gift, a birthday gift, or a valentine gift, you should give careful consideration to the occasion before purchasing the perfect gift.

There are various collections of handmade silver jewelry for you, from necklaces, pedants, rings, bracelets, earrings, watches, and even Tiffany inspired jewelry. If you will be giving a necklace to your wife, you may look into the most common types of handcrafted necklaces that your wife may love to have, like bow necklaces, Buddha necklaces, or charm necklaces.

Now, if you opt to choose silver jewelry that has been handcrafted elsewhere, you may opt to purchase ethnic jewelries which came from the Middle East. But you don’t actually have to go there to buy these jewelries. There are jewelry stores which offers imported ethnic jewelries which may as well cost more than ordinary handcrafted jewelry collections.

You may also opt to create your own handmade silver jewelry which can be a perfect hobby. However you will need guidance from a professional silversmith to help you create your own jewelry . You will have to follow certain instructions to help you out in handcrafting your own jewelry.

There are many ways to acquire the best silver jewelry that can be handcrafted by you or anybody else who would like to give a personal touch to their special gift. It is easier to get hold of these jewelries, for there are a lot of options where to get them from — even online. Try shopping online and search for the perfect piece of jewelry for that perfect gift.
